Scene Homework
Meanings of Shot techniques:
A long-shot contains landscape but gives the
viewer a more specific idea of setting. A long shot may show
the viewers the
building where the action will take place.
The audience can maybe guess their nature from the characters posture, maybe also estimate the protagonist or antagonist.
A Mid-shot contains the characters or a
character
from the waist up. From this shot, viewers can see
the characters' faces more clearly as well as their interaction with other
characters. This is also known as a social shot.
A close-up shot contains just
one character's
face. This enables viewers to understand the
actor's emotions and also allows them to feel empathy for the character. This
is also known as a personal shot.
An extreme close-up contains one
part of
a character's face or other
object. This technique is quite common in horror films, particularly the
example above. This type of shot creates an intense mood and provides
interaction between the audience and the viewer.
P.O.V (Point Of View) Shot
This shot shows a view from the subject's perspective. It is
usually edited in such a way that it is obvious
whose Point Of View it is.
Low angle
A low angle is a camera angle that looks up at a character.
This is the opposite of a high angle and makes a character look more powerful.
This can make the audience feel vulnerable and small by looking up at the
character. This can help the audience feel empathy if they are viewing the
frame from another character's point of view.
High angle
A high angle is a camera angle that looks down upon a subject. A character shot with a high angle will look vulnerable or small. These angles are often used to demonstrate to the audience a perspective of a particular character. The example above demonstrates to us the perspective or point of view of a vampire. As a viewer we can understand that the vampire feels powerful.
Establishing shot
An establishing contains a large amount of
landscape. It is often used at the beginning of a scene or a film to establish general location (setting). This is also known as an
establishing shot.
Bird's eye view
A bird's eye angle is an angle that looks directly down upon a scene. This angle is often used as an establishing angle, along with an extreme long shot, to establish setting.
Dollying
Sometimes called TRUCKING or TRACKING shots. The camera is placed
on a moving vehicle and moves alongside the action, generally following a
moving figure or object. Complicated dolly shots will
involve a track being
laid on set for the camera to follow, hence the name. The camera might be
mounted on a car, a plane, or even a shopping trolley (good method for
independent film-makers looking to save a few dollars). A dolly shot may be a
good way of portraying movement, the journey of a character for instance, or
for moving from a long shot to a close-up, gradually focusing the audience on a
particular object or character.
Mise en scene refers to all the objects and characters in a
particular frame. More specifically, it refers to the composition of the frame.
When you use the term mise en scene, you are discussing where the composer or director has placed all the elements of the scene within the frame.
Examples from Iron man:
Long-Shot
Showing the machine-gun shooting Tony Stark's house down this shot technique is very effective during the scene as it makes the machine-gun vulnerable to the background, furthermore it may also be a P.O.V shot as it is a shows a 'person on a helicopter aiming towards Stark's house,' this creates tension and allows the audience to judge between good and bad.The color scheme for this scene is brown which is an connotation to soil, in this sense making his house crumble to small grains of soil.
Mid-Shot
The Mid-shot is used in this scene showing 'Tony Stark' and 'The Iron Suit' from waist to head, the purpose of using the mid-shot is for the audience to focus on the facial expressions and the dialog, it also gives more information/ characteristics to the audience. Aligning with 'Tony Stark' and 'His suit' was a very good technique as it shows the bound between them two. The color scheme used is red, yellow and blue, red is a connotation of blood and violence, on the other hand yellow is a connotation to peace and being calm, blue also is a connotation to being calm.
Close-up Shot
They used a Close-up shot here to show his facial expressions, it shows him being very surprised and anxious, this can also be analysed as two-shot as it shows him and her both looking at each other. 'Tony Stark' is saved by his girlfriend Pepper inside the Iron man Suit, the helicopter had attacked Tony's house which were sent from the antagonist this created a lot of tension which was then balanced out with Pepper saving 'Tony'. The color scheme here is brown, red and peach.
Extreme Close-up Shot
The technique used here is an extreme close-up shot, this was used here to show how he feels and looks inside the Iron Man this technique was mostly used during fights to see the scares and his reaction to the environment as well as showing the high technology used inside. The color scheme used is blue which is a connotation to technique and electricity.
P.O.V (Point Of View) Shot
The P.O.V. shot is used here to show what he's seeing through the Iron man suit, furthermore the high-technology associates to it being in the future linking back to the movie genre. The color scheme here is mostly white associating to peace this links back to the fight between Iron man and Ivan which created tension, which was balanced out with Iron man destroying him and his heart piece, which was included in the scene.
Establishing shot
The shot used here is the Establishing shot this was when Iron man defeats Ivan in Iron man 2, this gives a massive view to the audience when the robots are self destruction and Tony taking Pepper to safety. This can also be interpreted as a Point Of View shot as Iron man is in the air. The color scheme here is very colorful with many colors this is a connotation to a celebration or victory this is reason why its effective after the battle, also can suggest the end of a movie.
Low Angle
The shooting technique used here is Low angle, this shows the robot has more power over pepper this shot can also be interpreted as over the shoulder shot showing the robot is the antagonist of the movie,i can say this because of the shape of the robot and the was it's looking associating to danger and death, this is very effective as it shows the connection between them both furthermore it may mean human creations can maybe be a threat to the human race. The color scheme here is blue which is a connotation to mass energy.
360 Degree Dolly Shot
The shot used in the video is a 360 degree shot which was achieved by using a Dolly which goes around the character on a Dolly trolley, this is used here when Tony stark is being equipped with the armor this can also be interpreted as a close up shot, as it shows facial expressions which is one of the elements that apply to a close up shot. This technique is effective as it shows the detail as well as fitting in withe scene itself for example whilst hes equipping his armor the camera rotates around him however it was very fetal that the camera was rotating around him making the audience dizzy. The color scheme is white and red, which is a connotation to war and violence which is a connection it to the next scene.
