Review

Hot Fuzz (2007)

Life at the countryside? A simple and stress free life? Impossible to adapt from the countryside to the city? Hot fuzz, directed by Edgar is packed with comedy and action. Action is mainly for a male audience; with comedy it also targets women creating a wider target audience.

Cornetto trilogy is a comedic genre films directed by Edgar Wright. The trilogy consists of Shaun of the Dead (2004), Hot fuzz (2007) and the world's end (2013).

In each of those movies there is a appearance of a Cornetto ice cream; according to the movie it has a relevant flavour and colour for example Shaun of the dead has a strawberry (red) Cornetto the connots to blood and crime, Hot fuzz has a blue original Cornetto this signifies the police force, The world's end has a green mint Cornetto connoting to aliens and science fiction.

Hot Fuzz is a very entertaining movie with a lot of comedy, suspense and partly horror. This movie stars Simon Pegg as Nickolas Angel who has been transferred from a city to the countryside; he’s a courageous and determined police officer; accompanied by Danny Butterman played by Nick Frost. Due to the criminal activity in the city Nickolas is suspicious about every action that occurs, this causes problem at times however over all its all pieces  to one puzzle.

Negative Representation of women

Negative Representation of women:

There is a negative representation of women being used in the Mr.Muscle (2010) advert.

Freeze Frame 1:

This is a mid-shot of her having difficulties cleaning the drain. This a negative representation of women as they are portrayed as housewives, this links back to the 1920's/1950's advert where women where the housewives. The gloves illustrates her as being clean and hygienic, furthermore she likes keeping everything organized: dishes, knives, spoons.

Freeze Frame 2:

Over the shoulder shot is used here, the purpose of using the is to show a conversation going on between them. In this freeze frame the women is at a lower angle to the man showing she is weaker and the man is dominant over her. The women is wearing  a purple top with connotates to magic and mystery linking back to the product cleaning in a magical way. Compared to the 1920's/1950's I think modern women now where more jewelry; in this scene she doesn't look like a housewife at all.

Freeze Frame 3:

This freeze frame can be interpreted in many way's: Two shot, Over the shoulder shot, Mid-shot, furthermore the man is created to look bigger and stronger than the women also uses need for sex as he shows his 6 Packs. During the 1920's/1950's they were characterized as keeping men happy whereas in this advert the man is helping the women and they are both happy, in which we can disagree to representation of women in the 1920's/1950's.

Freeze Frame 4:

In this Freeze frame a mid-shot has been used to show her holding the product, she is very happy to receive the product as it will help her in the cleaning up. In the 1920's/1950's women thought doing the house work would make them successful and happy, however from this advert we can infer you didn't have to do the house work to stay happy.

Freeze Frame 5:

In this freeze frame there is a two shot used tot show the relationship between them, furthermore them having a conversation. The women is thanking the man for his help, yet still the women is at a lower angle showing the man's importance.

Freeze Frame 6:

In this freeze frame editing has been used to show another women calling for Mr.Muscles. They use the appeal need for sex as she is bending over the window, furthermore they represent women being dependent on men.

Diet Coke

Diet Coke

There are very few types of camera techniques use, a hand held camera was mainly used though out the advert there were also other techniques for example: Close-up, Two shot, Long Shot, Over the Shoulder Shot, POV Shot. At the start of the advert there is a long shot used to show a man trying to open a glass bottle in the kitchen, furthermore a women enters the kitchen drinking 'Diet coke', this informs the audience it's a 'coke' advert directly. Then there is a close-up of her exchanging the diet coke with the glass bottle this show she is challenged to open it with the help of drinking 'diet coke', also showing the product in close-up. After they use a two-shot of the man curiously looking at her as thou she isn't going to open it, on the other hand the women is trying to open the glass bottle with her strength, once again the product 'diet coke' is shown in the man's hand. The setting now changes to a marriage location with the bride drinking 'diet coke' in which they use a Long shot to show the brides clothing. The setting changes once again to a club, there is a close-up shot of a women drinking 'diet coke' as well as an extreme close-up of the women pinching a mans butt, in which he then turns around to look, they use a close-up of his face to show his facial expressions being curious. Then they use a POV shot of him looking at another man thinking he pinched his butt, after there is a over the shoulder shot of them both looking at each other awkwardly. The setting changes to a office with a women in a meeting with business men, and another women walking past with 'diet coke' in her hand, then there is a close-up of her rubbing her nose on the window in a amusing way. To sum up camera techniques, I think there where many camera techniques used in such a compressed way, this is also conventional to adverts. The colour scheme is silver, red and black which connotate to women linking to the target audience.

Editing has only been used at the start, end and during the photographs at the wedding scene. They show the product 'diet coke' and a slogan hello you this is inform the target audience it's a coke advert.

Listerine Advert Analysis

Questions:

1. What product does it promote?
2. What facts about the product does it provide?
3. How do you know the target audience is women?
4. How is it attempting to appeal to women?
5. What persuasive language techniques does it use? Give examples
6. What is it suggesting about societies values at the time?
7. Do you think the people depicted in this advert represent typical people from the 1920's? Explain

This advert is promoting Listerine a antibacterial Mouth Wash. There is one fact in this print advert: 'Reduces plague by up to 56% more than brushing alone'  in which the statistics are empathized with a bigger and underlined font this is to make it eye catchy for the target audience. We cannot easily tell who the target audience it as there is only a pack shot, however on the other we can assume the target audience can be both men and women. There isn't persuasive language used. They used less copy/ information as all of the important stuff was on TV, radio and other digital communication, compared to the adverts in the 1920's they had to put all the information on one page.

This advert promotes Listerine, it isn't easy to identify this as it looks more like a marriage (clothing) advert due to the use of endorsement. There are many facts in this print advert, for example: 'no tooth paste kills germs like this ..... instantly' , 'Listerine antiseptic clinically proved four times better than tooth paste', this technique gives the target audience more trust in the product in using the product. There are many reasons no why we can assume the target audience is women: the word 'bride!' is a connotation to women and marriage, the women (endorsement). This print advert uses need for attention this is because the advert is trying to say if you don't use Listerine you will not be liked or be married linking back to the target audience being women. There are many persuasive techniques used in this print advert, for example: 'Listerine antiseptic does for you what no other toothpaste does for you' this also uses emotive language making it more personal. This print advert suggests women where unhygienic and smelt bad which meant they where left alone with nobody next to them, leaving women seem lonely. Women were depicted typically as they where expected to get married work and take care of the house.

Positive and Negative Representation of Women

Positive Representation of Women:

In this Advert women are represented as fit, strong and sporty women, this can be told through the image/endorsement she is wearing sporty short clothing which is a sex appeal, furthermore it is a connotation to women being concerned about their health and body linking to a positive representation of women. They only use the brand logo, this is because Nike is a well known brand in which people would know just by looking at the tick (brand logo).

Negative Representation of Women:

In this advert women are represented as un-hygienic women as it contains copy saying 'If you're still getting wet, start getting tough' from this we can infer that it's talking about body sweat which links back to being un-hygienic, however we cannot directly tell this print advert's target audience is women as it can also be for men, on the other hand if you look at the pack-shot of the Product it is held by a women which tell's the target audience this product is used by women, linking back to representation women were seen as weak, we can conclude this because she is holding the product at and angle with her fingers, whereas men would hold it straight with all their fingers around it shows they as strong.

1920's Women Representation

This advert promotes Dunlop a sports company, we can infer this through the tennis bat, tennis ball, sports clothing. In this print advert women a represented as skinny sporty and happy women which links back to the targeted audience manly being men, on the other hand it can also be women as they would want to be happy and skinny.

Appeal Advert

One Million Perfume:

This Advert uses Sex appeal through less clothing being wore, it also tells us that its a unisex perfume with two different shapes.

My Version:

Whereas my version uses sex appeal as well as autonomy, with a ratio of 1 man to 6 women, this was used to persuade the audience to think this perfume would attract women. The man is placed in the middle of the picture with a gray scale effect. Sex appeal is used through less clothing and skinny fit women.

The History of Advertising

The History of Advertising:

Advertising

Advertising:

This is the first advert that would come to my mind; as there is bright colours (Orange, Red, Yellow) this is very catchy as well as a unique clip art type background which matches with the theme of Fanta itself. With a  short catchy slogan/strap line "More Fanta. LESS Serious." in white makes it stand out from the background, furthermore there is a full stop after Fanta and Serious this allows the reader to pause for a second. The word "LESS" is emphasized by enlarging it. The layout of words are in a straight line like a tower connotating to the Fanta bottle size.

Skittles Advert

This skittles advert is very memorable to me as it has many features of a successful advert, its short (21 sec) and we can easily tell whats happening during the advert as well as it being humorous. The targeted audience would be children/young adults as children like sweets and a bit of CGI would look like magic, this would keep the audience entertained as well as sending a message to the audience.

How is it used in Action/Adventure films?

Conventional Element

How is it used in Action/Adventure films?

Protagonist

A Protagonist is used to separate the good and bad (Protagonist & Antagonist) mostly the Protagonist saves a damsel in distress, or the world from ending. Protagonist is a hero or a savior that is seen to be the good character mostly in Action/Adventure movies he/she may wear specific clothing refereeing to Mise-en-Scene, however it varies from movie to movie for example: Iron man has an Iron suit with futuristic technology, this also attracts teenagers as well as women (target audience). Mostly in an Action/Adventure movie they are equipped with futuristic technology or super human strength, there may be a use of Propaganda as it makes the audience imagine them having their powers. Protagonist is represented as the tough, rich and tall character sometimes the funny one for example 'Jack Sparrow' in 'Pirates of the Caribbean', protagonist's are usually men as they are a conventional to Action/Adventure movies.

Antagonist

A Antagonist is also used to separate the good and the bad (Protagonist & Antagonist) in most Action/Adventure movies the Antagonist captures the damsel in distress or something valuable to the Protagonist, that he will do anything to get it back, for example: Iron man 3 Pepper is kidnapped and Tony stark has to save her. Antagonist's usually wear dark clothing as dark colour symbolizes evil for example: Pirates of the Caribbean would have Pirate clothing: dark black eye patch, ripped clothing, broken teeth, this a code and convention of a Antagonist. Antagonists are represented as rich masterminds as they try to trap the Protagonist by blackmailing them through his/her weakness. Antagonist's are usually a male gender as they are seen as strong and experienced characters which fits in the role of a Antagonist.

Other characters

Other characters usually have normal clothing to make it realistic and fit in with the environment.Other characters mostly are visible in crowd's as well as in superhero movies they are vulnerable to many problems for example: natural disaster, fighting.

Plot

The plot in an Action/Adventure movie would be very complex as they would want to make a twist and full of action.

Locations

Locations are very important as it decides where it is and the audience can associate it to may thing, this makes it conventional to Action/Adventure movies. Location's are usually presented though a Birds Eye-View or Establishing Shot. The Most common location is New York, it's easily told as they show the statue of liberty, this is a key part of Locations as they usually showing landmarks or famous places that the audience are filmier to so can they can tell where it is filmed, furthermore this can also encourage the audience to go there.

Soundtrack

Sound is also a important feature of movies as it is very boring watching a movie without sound, different types of sounds can be associated to different things in a Action/Adventure movie the audience expect: crashes, gun firing making it a code and convention. Sound can be represented in many ways for example to create tension or build up tension this is usually used when something is going to happen, they increase the sound/beat, for example in Iron man during the fight of Iron man and the Iron monger the beats increased faster, this is synced in with the action as well.

Camera

Camera technique's are also important as they present the movie as well as different techniques represent different things for example a high angle is mostly used in Action/Adventure movies to show the antagonist and protagonist as well as showing the bound between them in this case for example someone might be vulnerable to the antagonist.

Mise-en-Scene

Mise-en-Scene is ranged from the most smallest detail to the largest objects this important as it can suggest many things as well as Mise-en-Scene builds everything up to make a perfect scene. Mise-en-Scene include: Make up, costumes, Blocking, Characters, Location, Lighting, Props, Casting & Preforming...

Editing

Editing brings the action to real-life on the other hand it can be over done making it look fake as well as show that editing has been done for example: Super human powers (Super man).

Analysis of Iron man

Analysis of Iron man:

In this scene there are many elements that support the fact that it's a Action/Adventure movie. Firstly, the use of futuristic technology is a important convention an Action/Adventure genre, furthermore its also conventional to a Sc-Fi genre. Secondly, the most straight forward way we can tell is the fight between 'Iron man' and 'Iron Monger' whom were the antagonist and protagonist of the movie 'Iron man', it was very simple in discovering the hero and villain as the 'Iron Monger' was a copyright of the 'Iron man' we can separate both from each other as the 'Iron Monger' had dark, grey and heavy-armored weapons which is a connotation to death, evil, and mystery, on the other hand 'Iron man' having yellow and red colors which are antonyms to each other, yellow is associated to happiness and energy, whilst red is associated danger, blood and war however both colors are associated to energy linking back to the 'Iron man' suit that generates infinite sustainable energy.

There were many shot techniques used in this scene as it is most effective during battles or fights, the audience usually concentrate on the action rather than how it's presented through the camera techniques. The most common shot used in this scene is a long shot, this was first used at the start of the video where Tony Stark's personal assistant is trying to find the antagonist and stop him linking back to a bit of romance between both of them, furthermore there was a fatal use of a shallow focus, this is used as it shows her trying her best to find him as well as her being alone at that point linking her to be venerable to the massive, destructive  and frightening 'Iron monger'. After Pepper sees the 'Iron monger' there is a sudden change to a over the shoulder shot showing the bright white eyes of the Iron monger at a high angle linking back to Pepper being vulnerable to him. Once again there was an immediate change to a P.O.V. (Point Of View) shot, this was from the Iron mongers point of view, we could see Pepper running away from the screen as well as the computer trying to identify who she is, this can be told as there is a red circle on her targeting her face, red is a connotation to war and death meaning he is trying to successfully  attack her.

The sound was fully synchronous with the action, for example when Iron man blasts from the sky and hits the massive Iron monger and takes him to the streets, the audience expected car crashes as well as cars being thrown linking back to the genre being Action/Adventure, as this was happening there was the constant sound of metal as well as loud car horns.

There was a lot of editing in this scene but was very fate to the audience however we can interpret that it was impossible to carry a car further more Iron man blasting from the air and hitting the Iron monger. There was also green screen used for the cars and road.

Youtube video analysis

You tube video analysis

In this scene there are many elements that show it's conventional to an action/adventure genre for example the Iron man suit referring to technology in the future making it a convention of an action genre as well as being an element of a SC-FI genre. There were a few camera techniques used in this scene for example a Mid-shot including Tony stark, P.O.V. shot showing Tony Stark reading the newspaper of him being dead linking back to the previous scene of the Mandarin attack, over the shoulder shot with the boys back towards the audience this shows the comparison between both characters ie. Tony being older than him as well as being more experienced.

The color scheme has many colors however the main ones are red and yellow which is a connotation to blood, death and hope, linking back to the denotation of the Iron man being destroyed / damaged in hope to fixing it back to go back home. During the whole scene there is no empty silence you can always hear diegetic sound's for example: the cracked wooded floor, I assume it was achieved by a Foley artist as its a very delicate sound it cannot be registered by the camera, the metal bending sound when the boy is turning the Iron man suit's head.

During the whole scene the volume of dialogue changed a lot for example: at the start the boy shouting out 'Oh my god...' was very loud as he moves toward Tony Stark his voice goes lower and lower as though he's moving further away from the audience. There was a dramatic change when he gets to Tony and hands him the newspaper of him being dead during the Mandarin attack. As well as being a action/ adventure movie this scene contains a small part of comedy, during the conversation between both Tony and the boy for example, this keeps the audience entertained also a bit of curiosity as the audience might associate it to something bad happening in the next scene.

Camera Shot's Homework

Scene Homework

Meanings of  Shot techniques:

Long-Shot

A long-shot contains landscape but gives the viewer a more specific idea of setting. A long shot may show
the viewers the building where the action will take place.
The audience can maybe guess their nature from the characters posture, maybe also estimate the protagonist or antagonist.

Mid-Shot

A Mid-shot contains the characters or a character from the waist up. From this shot, viewers can see the characters' faces more clearly as well as their interaction with other characters. This is also known as a social shot.

Close-Up Shot

A close-up shot contains just one character's face. This enables viewers to understand the actor's emotions and also allows them to feel empathy for the character. This is also known as a personal shot.

Extreme Close-up Shot

An extreme close-up contains one part of a character's face or other object. This technique is quite common in horror films, particularly the example above. This type of shot creates an intense mood and provides interaction between the audience and the viewer.

P.O.V (Point Of View) Shot

This shot shows a view from the subject's perspective. It is usually edited in such a way that it is obvious whose Point Of View it is.

Low angle

A low angle is a camera angle that looks up at a character. This is the opposite of a high angle and makes a character look more powerful. This can make the audience feel vulnerable and small by looking up at the character. This can help the audience feel empathy if they are viewing the frame from another character's point of view.

High angle

A high angle is a camera angle that looks down upon a subject. A character shot with a high angle will look vulnerable or small. These angles are often used to demonstrate to the audience a perspective of a particular character. The example above demonstrates to us the perspective or point of view of a vampire. As a viewer we can understand that the vampire feels powerful.

Establishing shot

An establishing contains a large amount of landscape. It is often used at the beginning of a scene or a film to establish general location (setting). This is also known as an establishing shot.

Bird's eye view

A bird's eye angle is an angle that looks directly down upon a scene. This angle is often used as an establishing angle, along with an extreme long shot, to establish setting.

Dollying

Sometimes called TRUCKING or TRACKING shots. The camera is placed on a moving vehicle and moves alongside the action, generally following a moving figure or object. Complicated dolly shots will
involve a track being laid on set for the camera to follow, hence the name. The camera might be mounted on a car, a plane, or even a shopping trolley (good method for independent film-makers looking to save a few dollars). A dolly shot may be a good way of portraying movement, the journey of a character for instance, or for moving from a long shot to a close-up, gradually focusing the audience on a particular object or character.

Mise-en-scene

Mise en scene refers to all the objects and characters in a particular frame. More specifically, it refers to the composition of the frame. When you use the term mise en scene, you are discussing where the composer or director has placed all the elements of the scene within the frame.

Examples from Iron man:

Long-Shot

Showing the machine-gun shooting Tony Stark's house down this shot technique is very effective during the scene as it makes the machine-gun vulnerable to the background, furthermore it may also be a P.O.V shot as it is a shows a 'person on a helicopter aiming towards Stark's house,' this creates tension and allows the audience to judge between good and bad.The color scheme for this scene is brown which is an connotation to soil, in this sense making his house crumble to small grains of soil.

Mid-Shot

The Mid-shot is used in this scene showing 'Tony Stark' and 'The Iron Suit' from waist to head, the purpose of using the mid-shot is for the audience to focus on the facial expressions and the dialog, it also gives more information/ characteristics to the audience. Aligning with 'Tony Stark' and 'His suit' was a very good technique as it shows the bound between them two. The color scheme used is red, yellow and blue, red is a connotation of blood and violence, on the other hand yellow is a connotation to peace and being calm, blue also is a connotation to  being calm.

Close-up Shot

They used a Close-up shot here to show his facial expressions, it shows him being very surprised and anxious, this can also be analysed as two-shot as it shows him and her both looking at each other. 'Tony Stark' is saved by his girlfriend Pepper inside the Iron man Suit, the helicopter had attacked Tony's house which were sent from the antagonist this created a lot of tension which was then balanced out with Pepper saving 'Tony'. The color scheme here is brown, red and peach.

Extreme Close-up Shot

The technique used here is an extreme close-up shot, this was used here to show how he feels and looks inside the Iron Man this technique was mostly used during fights to see the scares and his reaction to the environment as well as showing the high technology used inside. The color scheme used is blue which is a connotation to technique and electricity.

P.O.V (Point Of View) Shot

The P.O.V. shot is used here to show what he's seeing through the Iron man suit, furthermore the high-technology associates to it being in the future linking back to the movie genre. The color scheme here is mostly white associating to peace this links back to the fight between Iron man and Ivan which created tension, which was balanced out with Iron man destroying him and his heart piece, which was included in the scene.

Establishing shot

The shot used here is the Establishing shot this was when Iron man defeats Ivan in Iron man 2, this gives a massive view to the audience when the robots are self destruction and Tony taking Pepper to safety. This can also be interpreted as a Point Of View shot as Iron man is in the air. The color scheme here is very colorful with many colors this is a connotation to a celebration or victory this is reason why its effective after the battle, also can suggest the end of a movie.

Low Angle

The shooting technique used here is Low angle, this shows the robot has more power over pepper this shot can also be interpreted as over the shoulder shot showing the robot is the antagonist of the movie,i can say this because of the shape of the robot and the was it's looking associating to danger and death,  this is very effective as it shows the connection between them both furthermore it may mean human creations can maybe be a threat to the human race. The color scheme here is blue which is a connotation to mass energy.

360 Degree Dolly Shot

The shot used in the video is a 360 degree shot which was achieved by using a Dolly which goes around the character on a Dolly trolley,  this is used here when Tony stark is being equipped with the armor this can also be interpreted as a close up shot, as it shows facial expressions which is one of the elements that apply to a close up shot. This technique is effective as it shows the detail as well as fitting in withe scene itself for example whilst hes equipping his armor the camera rotates around him however it was very fetal that the camera was rotating around him making the audience dizzy. The color scheme is white and red, which is a connotation to war and violence which is a connection it to the next scene.
